Music Hall

Ö3 took to the airwaves in 1967. It was specifically aimed at a younger audience and ran a more contemporary schedule that provided its listeners with ambitious entertainment programming. Its programmes included formats like Musicbox and Music Hall, which was hosted by Günther Schifter himself, and was first broadcast weekly, airing for the first time in January 1968.

Schifter only ever played 78s on his programmes. Every single one came from his own collection, which by that point had grown to over 20,000 items. Music Hall, with its signature tune “Walk, Jenny, Walk”, wasn't just about music; it also featured a slot called “Nachrichten von damals” (“News from those days”), which provided historically accurate “news reports” on everything from political events to cinema listings, sports news and food prices in the wartime and pre-war period. These radio programmes reflected Schifter's deep knowledge and exacting attention to detail, and featured a host of musical treasures from the jazz and swing era. He provided comprehensive details for every track he played, which made his broadcasts a great resource for shellac collectors as well as lively, entertaining history lessons.
