Personal data and their use

Our services can be used without providing personal data or by providing anonymized data, wherever possible and reasonable.

Personal data includes, for example, your name, address, telephone number or age or date of birth, but also your IP address or geolocation data, which can be used to identify you. We only process personal data that goes beyond the automatic data collection described below if you voluntarily provide it to us, for example, when you enter into a contractual relationship with us through a purchase or exchange process, register with us or otherwise contact us. After the legal retention periods with regard to the Federal Tax Code and the Court of Auditors Act have expired, the data will be deleted by the Austrian Media Library, Technisches Museum Wien.

Personal data processing takes place in the following cases in particular:

  • When registering with a double-opt-in procedure in the form of a customer account for ticket requests, to request a temporary, individual activation of a blocked recording or to save permanent URLs of individual recordings accessible online with their titles in watch lists and to set personal markers in them. The data is stored in our database for later processing when you log in. In addition, data that we receive from your browser during your visit is automatically stored in our log files. This means that the IP address is known and a cookie is created on your computer to store the login status for the ticket system. This cookie guarantees that the activation of recordings can be processed properly.

  • Ticket requests for recording access will be deleted at the end of the following month.
  • The titles and URLs of recordings, search results or pages that you manage in your watch lists will remain, but can only be viewed by you (not even by the Österreichische Mediathek) and can also be deleted by you. You can also delete your registration, i.e. your account with all its contents, after logging in to your account settings.

  • For the processing of contracts and registrations that are completed using forms on our website or by email (e.g. services such as tours and workshops, archive breakfasts, lunch lectures, events, etc.)
  • For (pre-)contractual processing when ordering reproductions, copies of archive documents and items, and for object recordings

  • When you visit the Austrian Media Library and order to listen to or view archive documents
  • For communication purposes (e.g. to answer enquiries, when you communicate with us via contact forms or provided contact information or in the context of job applications)
  • For marketing purposes (e.g. when you register for one of our newsletters or request postal mailings)

  • To optimize our website and our services (e.g. through communicated feedback in the sense of suggestions or complaints)

Automatic data collection and integration of third-party services

The Technical Museum Vienna with the Austrian Media Library stores all website accesses in so-called server log files. This access data is transferred to us by your browser. This is the following data: Date and time of access, name of the page viewed, IP address, the URL from which you came to our site, the amount of data transferred, and information about your browser (provider and version). We need this information to optimize the service of the website and to correct any errors, but also to protect the website from attacks, such as DDOS attacks.

The Technisches Museum Wien and the Austrian Media Library use cookies on their website for automatic data collection. Cookies are small text files that are stored on the visitor's computer. These small files are used purely for storing information. The aim of the cookie is to store your personal activities and interests so that we can use them on your next visit, for example by retaining certain settings you have made.

To understand and measure the performance of our website and the interaction with our visitors, we use Matomo Analytics (a service provided by InnoCraft Ltd., 150 Willis St, 6011 Wellington, New Zealand, NZBN 6106769). Matomo is an open-source analysis software that focuses on data protection and is GDPR compliant. The data is anonymized and analyzed on a secure server in the EU and is not shared with third parties. For more information, please refer to the privacy policy of Matomo Analytics.

Technically necessary cookies are stored directly by our website in your browser to provide you with the best possible user experience. These cannot be automatically deactivated when you enter our website, as certain functionalities (e.g. when creating an account for ticket requests, logging in to the ticket system) would otherwise not be available. You can still prevent the installation of cookies by selecting the appropriate settings on your browser, however, we would like to point out that in this case you may not be able to use the full functionality of this website.

When you visit our website, you can give us permission to use statistical cookies (Google Analytics and Matomo) or refuse them. This website uses Matomo Analytics (a service provided by InnoCraft Ltd, 150 Willis St, 6011 Wellington, New Zealand, NZBN 6106769) for this purpose. Matomo is an open-source analysis software that focuses on data protection and is GDPR-compliant. The data is anonymized and analyzed on a secure server in the EU and is not shared with third parties. For more information, please refer to the privacy policy of Matomo Analytics and Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google Inc., 1600 Amphitheater Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA and Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland. Google Analytics uses cookies, which are stored on your computer and enable an analysis of your use of the website. The information generated by the cookie about your use of this website (including your IP address) is transmitted to a Google server in the USA and stored there. Google uses this information on our behalf to evaluate your use of the website, to compile reports on website activity for us and to provide other services relating to website and internet use. Google may also transfer this information to third parties if this is required by law or if third parties process this data on behalf of Google. Further information about the type, scope and purpose of the data collected by Google can be found at support.google.com/analytics/answer/6004245. We use Google AdWords to place advertisements and to measure the performance of these advertising measures. To do this, we use Google AdWords conversion tracking for different periods of time, but not permanently. If you click on a Google AdWords ad while searching on Google and come to our website through this ad, we can see which ad you used to come to our website. No personal data is stored in this process. We only receive an advertising ID and statistical evaluations, which we can use to determine which of our advertising campaigns are particularly effective. In addition to the measures already described, you can configure your browser to disable cookies for conversion tracking by blocking cookies from the domain www.googleadservices.com.

If Google Adwords is used for the website www.mediathek.at, this is indicated in the Cookiebot under marketing cookies and can be rejected.

We use so-called social media plug-ins from Facebook (Meta), Instagram (Meta) and X (Twitter) on our website. These plug-ins are hidden on every page behind the arrow symbol with the wording “Share”. As long as you do not activate these plug-ins by clicking on them, no information will be exchanged with the respective platforms. If you activate the plug-ins by clicking on them, a connection to the server of the respective social media provider is automatically established. This means that the social media service receives information about which pages you visit. The Technisches Museum Wien has no influence over which data is transferred to the respective provider. If you are logged in to a social media provider at the same time as visiting the website, the plug-in can connect to your account with the respective social media provider. If you click “Like” or write a comment via the plug-in, the plug-in transmits this information to the social media provider and links it to your account with that provider. If you do not consent to this procedure, you must log out of your social media account before clicking on the plug-in or install an add-on on your device that blocks social media plug-ins.

In addition, we also use the Facebook pixel service, Meta. This service allows us to collect information about how visitors use our website in order to optimize and improve it. The Meta pixel service collects information such as the visitor's IP address, the browser used, the pages visited and the time of the visit. This information is anonymized and cannot be linked to specific individuals.

It is possible to opt out of the pixel service on our website. To do this, you can disable the corresponding cookie by adjusting your browser settings. However, please note that disabling the cookie may also prevent some features of our website from working properly. If you choose to opt out of the meta-pixel service, no data about your use of our website will be collected.

Please note that the privacy policies of the respective providers (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) also apply to social media plug-ins and the meta-pixel service.

This also applies if you follow links we have set to these social media platforms, even if they are our own social media presences on these platforms.
