Terms of use

As a cultural heritage institution and audiovisual archive, the Österreichische Mediathek is responsible for archiving publications of the most diverse content, sources and (contemporary) historical backgrounds and making them accessible to the public. The holdings are not subject to any evaluation by the Österreichische Mediathek and serve primarily the purpose of scientific research. The Austrian Mediathek expressly distances itself from all discriminatory, violence-glorifying and National Socialist content.

Legal information:

The Österreichische Mediathek would like to point out that all media on this website are protected by copyright. Downloading or creating digital or analog copies, as well as further use or reproduction, distribution or provision, constitutes a violation of the applicable copyright law and is therefore not permitted.

Terms of use:

All media files are available as online streams. Listening/viewing is free of charge.

The Österreichische Mediathek would like to point out that the ability to listen to or view streamed media at any time and from any location fundamentally replaces the need to make copies for private or personal use and for the purposes of scientific research.

Request ticket: For legal and/or content-related reasons, some recordings can only be made available for scientific research after personal registration.

Registration and login are required to use these functions. The user account is free of charge.

All personal data will be treated confidentially and will not be passed on to third parties. It will be used only for the fulfillment of the tasks of the Technisches Museum Wien with the Österreichische Mediathek. At your request, please email to mediathek(a)mediathek.at, and we will delete your data.

Your request for media that is not freely accessible online will be processed manually and may therefore take up to two business days. If your request is granted, you will receive an e-mail with a valid access link that is available for seven calendar days. All media is available as an online stream; downloads are not possible and are prohibited for legal reasons.

The following applies to all media streamed by the Österreichische Mediathek: Listening / viewing is free of charge. All media files are available as online streams. Downloading or creating digital or analog copies, as well as further use or reproduction, distribution or making available, constitutes a violation of applicable copyright law and is therefore not permitted.

Insofar as it is legally possible, copies may be ordered for a fee, but only for private use and for the purposes of scientific research in accordance with § 42 of the German Copyright Act. (mediathek [at] mediathek.at)

Apart from any archive fees that may apply, in the case of uses that go beyond personal, private use, the necessary rights clarifications (e.g. reproduction and performance rights) are to be carried out by the customer or personal and/or institutional users themselves. The customer or personal and/or institutional users will indemnify and hold the Technisches Museum Wien harmless against all claims by third parties in the event of improper use.

At the same time, the Österreichische Mediathek would like to point out that the fact that the streamed media can be heard and viewed anywhere and at any time basically replaces the need to make copies for private or personal use and for the purposes of scientific research.

If copies are requested for use beyond private use and the obvious use of the media library websites with the freely accessible streamed media cannot actually be implemented for third parties (exhibitions, etc.), these can, as mentioned, only be made for private or personal use and for the purposes of scientific research, provided this is legally possible. The users themselves and/or the institutions are always solely responsible for clearing the rights for any use beyond private use and for purposes of scientific research.

Requests for copies of ORF documents should be addressed to the ORF's audio or video service or customer service.

Requests for copies of documents from the Filmarchivs Austria should be addressed to the Filmarchivs Austria.

Media available in stores are not copied by the Österreichische Mediathek for third parties, but must be purchased by interested parties in stores.
