Music Hall was broadcast on Ö3 from 1967 onwards, with Schifter presenting the format he had himself conceived. It proved a great success over many years, and had a loyal audience that appreciated the weekly show, with its combination of 78s from Schifter's impressive collection and his “News from those days” history lessons.
These radio programmes reflected Schifter's deep knowledge and exacting attention to detail, and featured a host of musical treasures from the jazz and swing era. He provided comprehensive details for every track he played, which made his broadcasts a great resource for 78s collectors as well as lively, entertaining history lessons.
In the 1980s, the programme was syndicated on Austrian state broadcaster ORF's local radio stations, under the same title and staying true to the tried-and-tested concept Schifter had established. Later on, ORF embarked on an overhaul its radio programming. These changes took Ö3 in a more commercial direction and heralded the end of Schifters Schellacks, first on Ö3 itself, and then on local radio stations. It was broadcast for the last time in 2000. For a while, Schifter's enthusiastic listenership could find him across the border in Bavaria where he presented Schellack Souvenirs on Bayrischer Rundfunk until he finally called time on his decades-long radio career in 2003.
