Hermann Winkelmann, (b. 8 March 1849, Brunswick, Germany; d. 18 January 1912, Mauer near Vienna), tenor.
Hermann Winkelmann joined the Vienna Court Opera in 1883, and was renowned primarily for his performances of Wagner’s works. One of his trademark roles was that of Tannhäuser, a part he played in Mahler’s first performance of the opera at the Vienna Court Opera on 5 September 1897, singing alongside Reichmann, Schrödter and Abendroth. He also sang under Mahler in the opening night of Bedřich Smetana’s Dalibor on 4 October 1897, before going on to perform as Mahler’s first Tristan on 24 October 1897. In subsequent years he went on to appear in a variety of productions, including a production of Karl Goldmark’s Die Königin von Saba (The Queen of Sheba) on 29 April 1901 alongside Demuth, Hesch, Elizza, Mildenburg and Kurz, before completing his career at the Vienna Court Opera in 1906.
