On October 18, 1931 the conductor Fritz Stiedry wrote to Arnold Schönberg: “On November 3 I will perform the Serenade, I am already in the middle of rehearsals.” Later on he informed the composer, who was staying in Barcelona for health reasons, that the work was being broadcast on the radio. Schönberg replied: “Many thanks for your telegram. When we came home and found it, we already knew that we would not be able to hear the piece. We had spent the entire afternoon in vain, trying to find somebody who can hear Berlin.” (Letter dated November 13, 1931) Schönberg had already read about the concert’s huge success in the meantime, though. His student Josef Rufer reported on the “beautiful performance, the music played with such a natural approach, which brought the work an entirely spontaneous, heartfelt success. But it is also indescribably beautiful; with such profound inner merriment that wants to bashfully hide behind all kinds of jokes, yet it is unable to (and you have to laugh so much at that) – […] You must have been in such a terribly good mood at the time.” (Letter dated November 18, 1931)

Despite making several enquiries, Schönberg was unable to receive a full recording of his work, but merely a test recording which begins in the middle of the Menuett [b. 85] and ends after its conclusion, with noises from the musicians resting in the broadcasting studio. This brief passage conveys an impression that the ensemble adopted a lively style of playing in their rehearsals.
