The American composer and bassoon player Adolph Weiss studied with Arnold Schönberg from 1924 to 1927 at the Berlin Academy of Arts. When Schönberg emigrated to the United States in 1933, Weiss was soon among his closest confidants. As early as 1931 Weiss planned a performance of the “Wind Quintet,” op. 26, which he was to play in many concerts in the years to come. His recording of the first two movements, produced for Schönberg’s 65th birthday, gives an idea of the challenge the piece poses even for experienced musicians. The disc from Schönberg’s Estate bears witness to the technical limitations of a private recording – if the entire ensemble plays, the sound often appears distorted. However, Adolph Weiss’ sensitive birthday greeting on the A-side of the record makes up for some of the extra noises! (Text: Arnold Schönberg Center)
