Information

Content

Arnold Schönberg lived with his family on floor II of Liechtensteinstraße 68/70 in Vienna’s 9th district from September 1903 to January 1910. “Pleasant rooms, with a plain, tastefully decorated simplicity. […] [Schönberg’s] manner is plain and unpretentious, but full of vigor and energy with every artistic remark. While speaking he paces back and forth nervously through the room. His round, beardless face, despite its strangely still, nearly pastoral expression, reacts first. A slight frown, a flaring of the eyes, betrays the activity of his thoughts.” (Paul Wilhelm, in: Neues Wiener Journal, January 10, 1909). A photograph taken in the Liechtensteinstraße apartment shows the composer with a musical manuscript on the piano. This is the fair copy of String Quartet No. 1 in D minor, op. 7, which was begun in this apartment in March 1904.
Almost 30 years after the premiere by the Rosé Quartet on February 5, 1907, the Kolisch Quartet recorded opus 7 on December 29, 1936 in the United Artists Studio as the start to a complete recording of Schönberg’s quartets on a total of seven phonograph records. As a special extra, the empty B-side of the last record contains statements by all the people involved in the recording: Arnold Schönberg (composer), Alfred Newman (producer), Rudolf Kolisch (1st violin), Felix Kuhner (2nd violin), Eugen Lehner (viola), Benar Heifetz (violoncello), Franz Mahrer (sound engineer).
