In October 1925 Schönberg was appointed to hold a masterclass for composition at the Prussian Academy of Arts. The years leading up to his emigration to the US in 1933 were among his most creative as an artist. Shortly after moving to Berlin, Schönberg initially explored compositions in which he wanted to employ the twelve-tone method in a large orchestra setting. A passacaglia that remained a fragment produced the idea for his “Variations for Orchestra”, with May 2, 1926 given as the date when Schönberg began to compose the work. Opus 31 was finished on August 21, 1928 in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin on the French Riviera, and the written copy of the score was dated as completed on September 20, 1928. The premiere of the piece on December 2, 1928 by the Berlin Philharmonic and Wilhelm Furtwängler ended in disaster owing to insufficient rehearsal time. This meant that Schönberg was all the happier about the carefully prepared performance on March 23, 1931 on Frankfurt Radio, conducted by Hans Rosbaud, for which he held an introductory talk on the previous day. A partial recording of the concert contains the introduction of the variations, the theme, and also the complete first variation. (Text: Arnold Schönberg Center)
