Beethoven spent 35 of his 57 years in Vienna. Several of his works were premiered at the Theater an der Wien, including Symphony No. 5, which was first performed in 1808. There is no shortage of tales and stories surrounding what became known as the “Symphony of Fate”, not least because of its famous opening theme and the controversial title given to it by Beethoven’s secretary, Anton Schindler. The composer himself, who was increasingly struggling against the deafness fate had decreed for him, wrote that: "I want to reach into the very jaws of fate. It will not subjugate me completely – that much is for certain.

This recording features the symphony’s mighty climax. The Allegro fourth movement, written in C major, ends like a triumphal procession. It is played here in energetic style by the Berlin Philharmonic under Wilhelm Furtwängler (1886–1954).
