    Information

    Inhalt

The idea for Schönberg’s cantata “A Survivor from Warsaw” originated from the Russian dancer, dance teacher and choreographer Corinne Chochem in late March/early April 1947. The conversation with Chochem at Schönberg’s house in Rockingham Avenue about a joint project is illustrated by the discovery in Schönberg’s Estate of two records with works by contemporary composers who were living and working in the US: productions accompanying Chochem’s publications “Jewish Dances” (New York 1941) and “Palestine Dances” (New York 1947). The production that was intended to follow these two anthologies of traditional Jewish dances based on contemporary arrangements was either a pastiche composition similar to the “Genesis Suite” initiated by Nathaniel Shilkret, which had been published on records in the previous year containing Schönberg’s “Prelude” op. 44 and works by Igor Stravinsky, Alexander Tansman and Nathaniel Shilkret, and also compositions by composers from Chochem’s productions – Ernst Toch, Darius Milhaud and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, or a collection of individual commissioned works on songs from ghettos and displaced person camps.
