    Inhalt

Schönberg wrote brief introductory texts for the complete recording of his string quartets by the Kolisch Quartet between December 1936 and January 1937, and these texts were added to the four record sets as an insert. With reference to his opus 30, the composer emphasized: “This string quartet was commissioned by Mrs. Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge and performed in 1927 in Vienna on the occasion of one of the festivals of chamber music, which this great patron of the art of chamber music arranged in Vienna.” In another, more extensive introductory text, Schönberg describes his associations with the gnawingly repetitive figure at the beginning of the quartet: “As a little boy I was tormented by a picture of a scene from a fairytale ‘Das Gespensterschiff,’ (the Ghost Ship) whose captain had been nailed through the head to the topmast by his rebellious crew. I am sure that this was not the ‘program’ of the first movement of the third string quartet. But it might have been, subconsciously, a very gruesome premonition which caused me to write this work, because as often as I thought about this movement, that picture came to my mind.” (Text: Arnold Schönberg Center)
