    Information

    Inhalt

Composed between June and September 1946, the String Trio op. 45 alludes to the vaguely understandable and describable complex of musical inspiration due to its autobiographical context (reference to a heart injection with which Schönberg was resuscitated after collapsing). Physical pain and metaphysical vision are the sources used by the composer to form an auratic web across the purely musical structure of his opus 45. The recollection of physical experience during and after the injection does not present a bold, mimetic moment, but rather various domains of musical expression.
The radio program in which the work was broadcast by the station KFWB, located in Los Angeles, was the first part “of a series entirely devoted to performances of intimate music by the great composers of our time.” (Radio announcement) The string trio was commissioned in 1946 by Harvard University and it was premiered there the following year by the Walden Trio. The Koldofsky Trio, which played in the first radio broadcast of the work on September 13, 1948, was among Schönberg’s preferred ensembles. He was friends with its leader Adolph Koldofsky.
