In the summer of 1949 the organist Marilyn Mason visited Arnold Schönberg at his house in Los Angeles. She was able to fulfill one of the composer’s long-standing wishes: “One of his special requests was that he hear the Variations [op. 40] on the organ, so I made arrangements to play them for him at a Los Angeles church. He was transported by car and wheelchair to the church, where he heard, as he told us afterwards, the work performed for the first time on the organ. […] Mr. Schönberg remarked that because of its difficulty he felt that it had not been played often in this country, although he said he had heard that some European organists had played it. […] Schönberg himself knew very little about the organ as an instrument, and he said he wrote the work so that he could learn. He said, too, that he wished he had written more for the organ. He was surprised that the Variations had not been more often performed. To my reply, ‘They are very difficult to play,’ his answer was ‘That’s the way I wanted them!’ […] I must say that I have never tired of this work; l have played it for nine years. Whenever I return to it, I come back to an old friend, and sometimes one who pictures a new side to his personality.” (Marilyn Mason, 1956). (Text: Arnold Schönberg Center)
