    Information

    Inhalt

Like many of his artist contemporaries, Arnold Schönberg spent his summer vacations far away from urban distractions, giving free rein to his creativity during extended visits to the countryside. In cultural history, experiencing scenery and the encounter between humans and nature – as a phenomenon of aesthetic feeling – has always been linked to painting, poetry, and music. In Payerbach (Lower Austria) he composed the string sextet “Transfigured Night” op. 4 in the late summer of 1899. The string sextet is based on the poem “Transfigured Night” by Richard Dehmel. The five verses depict a woodland scene with two people; a woman speaks of her love for a man, although she is expecting another man’s child; the man comforts her and intends to accept the child as his own.

The recording by the extended Spencer Dyke Quartet was made in 1924 as the very first record production of the work for the National Gramophonic Society. This English company offered subscriptions for recordings of classical works that were always complete – which was not always the case in this early phase of recording history. Along with Claude Debussy and several English composers, Schönberg was among the few contemporary composers whose works were recorded by the ensemble.
