    Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony enthusiastically adopts the classical conventions of the genre. One contemporary review in the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung described it as “cheerful, accessible and very engaging.” This assessment is difficult to reconcile with the image of Beethoven as a titanic hero performing great feats in sound, and the Fourth Symphony therefore occupies a distinct niche within the composer’s oeuvre. The world premiere of the symphony took place in March 1807, and it was an exclusive affair hosted at Prince Franz Joseph Maximilian Lobkowitz’s palace, despite the fact the symphony was not dedicated to the prince.

    Here you can listen to the conclusion of the lively final movement. It ends with an extended coda featuring circular semiquaver movements, strong chords, and the occasional cantabile passage. In this recording from 1950, Wilhelm Furtwängler (1886–1954) conducts the Vienna Philharmonic, of which he was the permanent subscription conductor from 1927 to 1930. Furtwängler is still considered one of the most famous and controversial conductors of the 20th century. His actions during the period of Nazi rule, when he was courted by the regime at the same time as intervening on behalf of performers being persecuted by the authorities, are still disputed to this day.
